A scaling plan is the contract limit on a funded account moving with your profit. You start below the maximum the plan advertises, and more size unlocks as the account climbs through levels the firm sets. It is a risk control rather than a reward: the firm is limiting what a brand new funded trader can lose in a single trade. New to it? Here is what a scaling plan is.

13 of the 20 active futures prop firms on our list scale the funded contract limit. The ladder is set per account size rather than per firm, which is why the table runs to one row per plan and size. Topstep's 150K No Activation Fee account starts at three minis below $1,500 of balance and steps up from there. Funded Futures Network's 100K Express runs four minis to $3,000 of profit, six to $4,500 and ten above it. Legends Trading's 25K Elite is one mini up to $700 of profit and two above.

The seven firms not on this page give the full contract limit from the first funded trade: BluSky Trading Company, DayTraders, FundedNext Futures, IQ Capital, My Funded Futures, Phidias Prop Firm and Take Profit Trader. Neither model is better on its own. Scaling costs you size in the first weeks, which is when a funded account is most likely to breach anyway, and a flat limit is worth more to a trader who already trades full size. Read the ladder next to the drawdown amount on the same plan, because the two together decide how much risk the account can carry.

Which prop firms have a scaling plan?

13 of the 20 active futures prop firms on our list, named in the table with the ladder each one sets. Scaling is recorded per account rather than per firm, so a firm can scale one plan and give the full limit on another. The plan column is where to look.

How does a scaling plan work?

The firm sets profit levels, and each one unlocks more contracts on the funded account. Below the first level you trade the starting limit; clear it and the next tier opens. The levels are set per account size rather than per firm, and the table prints each one.

Do I start with fewer contracts once funded?

On a scaling plan, yes, and that is the point of it. The starting limit on a small funded account is often one or two minis against a maximum several times higher. Check it before you buy if your strategy needs full size from the first trade.
Q4

Is a scaling plan good or bad?

Neither on its own, and it depends on how you trade. Scaling costs you size in the first weeks, which is when a funded account is most likely to breach anyway, so the real cost is smaller than it looks. A trader who already trades full size loses more to it.

Does scaling apply to the evaluation?

No, not on our data. The scaling field we record is the funded contract limit, so an evaluation account keeps whatever limit its plan sets throughout. Evaluations have their own contract maximum, which sits on the account page under the firm beside the drawdown and the target.

Do the contracts scale back down if I lose?

On most ladders, yes, because the tier is read off the current balance or profit rather than the highest it reached. Topstep words its ladder as balance bands, so falling back through one takes the size with it. The firm's wording in the table decides it.

Which prop firms give full size from day one?

Seven on our list: BluSky Trading Company, DayTraders, FundedNext Futures, IQ Capital, My Funded Futures, Phidias Prop Firm and Take Profit Trader. They are not on this page because it lists the firms that scale, and a flat limit suits a trader who needs full size immediately.

What is contract scaling?

A rule that ties the number of contracts you may trade to the profit on the funded account. It is separate from the drawdown, though they work together: one caps the loss and the other caps the size that can cause it. Firms also call it a scaling plan.
