NG (Natural Gas Futures)
NYMEX natural gas futures, ticker NG. $10 per tick with violent weather- and storage-driven swings. Widely considered the hardest major futures market to trade.
In plain English
NG covers 10,000 MMBtu of natural gas, ticking in tenths of a cent worth $10. Its price lives on weather models and the Thursday EIA storage report, and it can run 5 to 10 percent in a session without news at all.
Prop traders nickname it the widow-maker for a reason: NG's gap-and-run behavior collides with daily loss limits and trailing drawdowns. Firms that allow it often exclude it from news-window trading and cap its contract counts tighter than indexes.
- A 10 cent NG move is 100 ticks x $10 = $1,000 per contract.
- On storage-report Thursdays that move can print in under a minute.
